Research Exchanges

This article is only available in English, as the exchanges require a decent knowledge of English.

Introduction

This once-in-your-life-experience is a great extension to your curriculum, not only by the research but also by the social program ensured by a local team.  Evenings filled with astonishing culture and incredible activities make sure you have the time of your life! You become best friends with people from all over the world... A dream comes true!

SCORE

On a national level the research exchanges are maintained and coordinated by the National Officers on Research Exchanges, Nika De Wilde en Johanna Jacobs.
The basis of the Research Exchange (RE) program are the so called bilateral contracts, meaning that for every student that goes abroad, a student from that country comes to Belgium.
All countries have their own Exchange Conditions (EC) that determine the information about the research exchange program that they provide for the incoming students. This information includes the available towns and periods, application documents needed, working conditions and vaccinations or required equipment, deadlines for sending the documents etc.
Hence it is important to have a look at these, on http://ifmsa.org/exchange/score/explore/exchange-conditions, before applying for a certain country.
A Research Exchange is a one month long research-oriented internship, mostly during summer, for all students of the faculty of Medicine. The student will, under supervision of a tutor, be guided through the basic principles of research such as literature studies, collecting information, scientific writing, data gathering & laboratory work and statistical analysis. This can be either on a fundamental science research project or on a more clinical oriented one.
Of course there is some recreation beside of the research work, and you can experience the local culture during the social program. During these optional activities you will meet other students and learn more about the host country.
On top of that, every student got a contact person assigned, who will help you with any questions, introduce you to the tutor, accompanies you during social program. This person will also be your contact in case of troubles of any kind.
